Fujitsu Research and Development Center Celebrates Opening in Beijing
Tokyo, October 26, 1998---Fujitsu Research and Development Center Co., Ltd., established in Beijing, China this February as a wholly owned Fujitsu company, has recently started operations. To commemorate the occasion, opening ceremonies were held today at the Chang Fu Gong Hotel in Beijing. In addition to notable figures from Chinese government and business circles, Fujitsu president Naoyuki Akikusa and Fujitsu Laboratories president Shigeru Sato were in attendance.
Fujitsu Research and Development Center Co., Ltd. is the first specialized R&D company that Fujitsu has set up in China. Its research activities cover all the areas in which Fujitsu is involved -- including hardware, software and electronic devices and related materials -- and are supported by high-level computer systems infrastructure. The center's conception dates from March, 1996, when Fujitsu executives met with People's Republic of China Chairman Jiang Zemin and expressed interest in establishing an advanced technology and research center as a pillar of the Fujitsu Group's business development plans in China. Since then, with the full support of Chinese government and industry leaders, Fujitsu has moved ahead with its plans.
Fujitsu Research and Development Center Co., Ltd. will develop links with various Chinese universities and research organizations by actively subcontracting research and carrying out joint research projects. With a firm grounding in Chinese culture and traditions, the company aims not only to perform research that can contribute to Fujitsu's information technology business but also to promote uniquely Chinese advanced technology that can be used throughout the world.
Fujitsu has developed its business operations throughout China by establishing representative offices in eight major cities, including Beijing, and by setting up fourteen subsidiaries for the manufacturing and development of communications systems, computers and electronic devices. Through its overseas group companies, notably ICL and Amdahl, Fujitsu is actively expanding its global business activities, and the company has R&D facilities throughout the world, including the United States and Europe. Fujitsu Research and Development Center represents an important addition to this global network.
