Fujitsu and Sun Announce picoJava Licensing Agreement

-picoJava I Core To Become Foundation for Fujitsu's Solutions In Home, Mobile And Office Network Devices-

Tokyo, November 10, 1997 -- Fujitsu Limited, Fujitsu Microelectronics, Inc. and Sun Microsystems, Inc., today announced that Fujitsu Limited and Sun Microsystems have signed an agreement in which Fujitsu will license the picoJava I microprocessor core from Sun. Fujitsu will incorporate the Sun technology into its own picoJava-based microprocessor designs which it will provide to the merchant market as well as use in its own system offerings.

Fujitsu's intent to provide picoJava I-based processors increases the momentum behind Java-enabled devices. In addition, it reinforces Sun's strategy of enlisting world-class semiconductor manufacturers in bringing Java processors and Java-enabled products to the marketplace.

"Adding Fujitsu to the list of picoJava I licensees further demonstrates that the Java platform has unstoppable momentum and that world-class companies see the advantage of this technology," said Raj Parekh, vice president and general manager of Sun Microelectronics' Volume Products Group. "As more companies commit to creating Java-based processors, the portfolio of Java processors will expand to address numerous new applications."

Fujitsu's low power technologies, together with the optimized execution of native bytecode by a picoJava I core, makes it possible to extend battery life and save on code memory compared to other platforms. Fujitsu intends to capitalize on this advantage when it incorporates the picoJava I core into consumer and communication devices such as web-phones, cellular phones, and network computers.

"The Internet has opened new opportunities for the development of communications and consumer products," said Bami Bastani, executive vice president of the Systems LSI Group of Fujitsu Microelectronics, Inc. of San Jose. "With attributes such as high performance, low power and reduced memory requirements, the market for System LSI products based on a picoJava core is expected to be large."

"The picoJava I core is the most efficient way for our OEM customers to bring the interoperability advantages of the Java environment to end-user oriented products. We intend to deploy picoJava I technology into a broad range of products at Fujitsu" said Ryusuke Hoshikawa, member of the board and group president, LSI Products Group, Fujitsu Limited of Tokyo.

This licensing agreement enhances the already close relationship between Sun and Fujitsu. In addition to being a long-time licensee of the SPARC architecture, Fujitsu has recently positioned the Java platform at the center of its network computing efforts. An illustration of this strategy is Fujitsu's announcement that it is porting the JavaOS onto its offerings based on the SPARClite platform.
